Established in 1945 by Céline Vipiana Céline started out as a made-to-measure children's shoes business. In 1960 the label branched out in casual sporty women's wear and leather accessories. The popularity of these new lines brought in a new elegant clientele and represented a turning point for the business. "Modern women do not need whimsical outfits," Vipiana said. "They need chic clothes that are comfortable and easy to wear. Lots of separates to combine, clothing for travelling light." In 1996 the brand was acquired by LVMH, current creative director is Phoebe Philo who brought London cool to this Parisian brand.
